چکیده

Foreword There is a great need for more knowledge of the effects on the marine environment of discharges to the sea from the offshore oil and gas industry. The long-term effects in particular are of great interest, as we know very little about them. More knowledge is thus essential if the authorities are to be able to control the development of this sector and to coordinate the exploitation of our oil and gas reserves with other uses of the marine environment. A central aspect of this is that the total impact on the marine environment must not bring about changes in biological diversity or in the marine ecosystem.

In situ cardiac function in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua): effects of acute and chronic hypoxia.

Recent in vivo experiments on Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) acclimated to chronic hypoxia (6-12 weeks at 10 degrees C; Pw(O(2)) approximately 8-9 kPa) revealed a considerable decrease in the pumping capacity of the heart. To examine whether this diminished cardiac performance was due to the direct effects of chronic moderate hypoxia on the myocardium (as opposed to alterations in neural and/or ho...

Effects of Salt and Bittern on Inosinic acid- and Inosine-Degrading Enzyme Activity in Pacific Cod Muscle

Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) inhabits the entire North Pacific region and supports the third largest fishery after walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma) and Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua). Although walleye pollock is often processed into various food products, Pacific and Atlantic cod are often preserved using salt for transport and consumption worldwide. Salt suppresses bacterial growth an...
